Dr. PrabirBhaumik - Professor Sanku of Present Days

Taking ultra-modern medical facilities to the remote and rural areas. That is what Dr. PrabirBhaumik longs for and to make that happen he is bringing neo-technical medical equipments to these places at costs next to nil. -- Samrendramitra

Staying far away far from Kolkata at Giridih, aloof from the chatters of the city his love for science urges him to make amazing creations out of stuff that we usually throw away in our dustbins. Unlike our dustbins, his dustbin rolls out things like ‘Miracural’ antibiotic tablets, shock proof vests made out of Carbothine , ‘Luminimax’ which looks almost like a small naphthalene ball but with just a spark illuminates like a 200 watt CFL and from time to time through many other pioneering efforts like these he has left the world astonished. Lying in the shades away from the lime light of the tinsel town he works, works for the betterment and solving health related issues of the deprived sections of the society. Sharing some of his valuable time and having a vivid conversation was really a welcome opportunity and on top of that learning experience.

Now this opportunity was not easy to get as he stays far away from the city at Kolaghat in Midnapore east. He is Dr. PrabirBhaumik, a child specialist by profession but he has a lot more to him than just being a doctor. Whilst the conversation I could see his other side overflowing with creativity and compassion for others which readily reflects on his profession as well. His golden CV constitutes: Ex-practitioner at R G Kar Medical College, a present member of the working committee of Indian Association of Pediatrics, when combines with his mind’s ability to think out of the way makes him do what he is doing i.e taking advanced technologies in medical sciences to places where it had never gone before, the majority of a third world country like India, the rural India where they need it the most. This all has been made possible due to tireless efforts of Dr. PrabirBhaumik. In Kolaghat itself he has built a Pediatric center “Arogya”, justifying his greed to serve. “I was born here. And still I feel I belong here. In no way I feel ashamed at this.I am happy, I am satisfied. I have been witnessing my father, a school teacher who donateswhole of his pension for the betterment of widows in our area and I can proudly say that I am working on somewhat his lines and would want my son, studying in Ramkrishna Mission to accumulate the same humane values.

I started from nil and reached where I am, a state where I’m able to lend my hands to help the helpless. This is my achievement is rather than being a mere money earning machine.” to quote Dr. PrabirBhaumik.And these humanitarian values admiring his way forward. After completing his studies he joined, 10km (a one day travel at that point of time) distant Jamtala health center where there was no electricity and he had to work in the light of just a lantern. “Their treatment meant only prescribing paracetamols and diaginesor in worst case referring to the city hospitals. The times were discouraging then. I was young and had lots of dreams and pursuing them I finally had to leave that job.” adds Dr. Bhaumik. The dream was to build a health center where the rural children would get all facilities of modern treatmentand to achieve this dream ‘Arogya’ has established 12 years ago. For successful treatment of Arogya, many ailing children and premature babies who came from Howrah, Midnapore east and west and Hoogli, have come around. And here DrPrabirBhaumik gave back life to 900 gram a new born baby to change the blood. Also four new born premature babies were cured and that credit only goes to Dr. PrabirBhaumik. At once that kind of advanced treatment is possible in private hospital of rural areas when your mind would have sufficient invention power and lots of effort to bring these highly improved treatments into the grip of rural people. We are taking about the inventing power of Dr. PrabirBhaumik. So here are four examples of these.

First example: Traveling Incubator is very essential machine of advanced treatment. But as it is very costly, so there are only two machines available in West Bengal. Into this machine an artificial womb has been created to take a child from one place to another. This is true that Arogya is the owner of one Incubator and this has been possible only for Dr. PrabirBhaumik’s inventing power. Because, He has made up the valuable Incubator in just few lakhs with the help of his scientific brain. Traveling into the Incubator new born babies are coming to Arogya from far away for their treatment and sometimes they are reaching to Kolkata’s Rabindranath Tegore Heart Research Center also.

Second example: Phototherapy. Usually it is used for the treatment of premature Baby. This machine has cost around seventy thousand. DrBhaumik has made up ten more phototherapy machines with the help of one and those are cost around five thousand averagely.

Third Example: Oxygenator. This machine produces oxygen which is distributed by pipelines into whole center. And Dr. Bhaumik’s inventing ability helps Arogya to make more four oxygenators.

Forth Example: Oxygen Tob. There is 20% oxygen in our atmosphere but often we need 100% oxygen. Oxygen mask is not comfortable for the pre mature babies and the necessity has fulfilled by the oxygen Tob which is made by Dr. Bhaumik.
