ROP Research And OAE Research Are First Time In RURAL BENGAL
O.A.E (Oto - Aquastic Emission Exam)
It is a procedure to determine the cochlear status specifically the outer hair cell functions. It is used to:
- Screen hearing particularly in neonates, infants and individuals, developmental disabilities.
- Distinguish between the savory and neural components of SNHL.
In our institution it is done in one of premature babies to detect hearing anomaly at the earliest. By early detections, the baby can be given proper treatment and proper speech therapy and rehabilitations can be planned. It is being done in our institution for the last 18 months. Hope our effort will help the premature babies to grow up in a melodious surroundings. This is first time held in rural West Bengal.
R.O.P (Retinopathy Of Prematurity)
ROP affects immature vasculature in the eyes of premature babies. Earlier the etiology was thought to be due to oxygen therapy. Now the risk of ROP depends on the degree of prematurity mainly along with other risk factors like apnea, infections, heart disease, hypereaphia etc.
In our institution, ophthalmological examinations are being performed for the last 6 years in order to detect ROP at the earliest. May this help the premature babies to grow up with a normal visions. This is first time held in rural West Bengal.
Use Of Coconut Oil As Supplementary Nutrition In Preterm Baby
It is known to all that mother’s milk is the best diet for a baby. But it has been noticed that inspite of proper breast feeding, the weight gain is not satisfactory in case of preterm babies.
Hence coconut oil is supplemented as a source of medium chain triglycerides. It is absorbed and metabolized rapidly with minimal storage in body. It also enhances thermo genesis and helps the baby to maintain temperature.

It is being practiced for last 3 years with favorable outcome.
Prevalence Of CHD (Congenital Heart Disease) In Rural Bengal
CHD is a burden to the patients’ parents in the rural area both economically and socially.
Ironically it has been seen that the prevalence of CHD is more common in families. As it has multi factorial etiology we are trying the find out the common ones in relation to poverty and CHD
